Single Girder vs Double Girder EOT Crane: How to Choose for Your Factory

Choosing between a Single Girder EOT Crane and a Double Girder EOT Crane is one of the most critical structural decisions during the planning of a new factory bay or workshop expansion. While both crane types perform overhead material handling, their load capacity envelopes, hook approaches, deadweights, and building column load requirements differ substantially.

Structural Comparison Table

Design Parameter Single Girder EOT Crane Double Girder EOT Crane
Standard Capacity Range1 Ton to 20 Ton5 Ton to 100 Ton (and above)
Typical Bay SpanUp to 25 to 30 MetersUp to 35 to 45 Meters
Hoist ConfigurationUnderslung or Low Headroom trolley running on bottom flangeCrab trolley running on top rails between dual box girders
Hook Lift HeightLimited by hoist body hanging below girderMaximum lift height (hook rises between twin girders)
Structural DeadweightLower deadweight; reduces building column stressesHigher deadweight; requires heavier gantry girders and columns
Auxiliary Hoist CapabilityRare / Not practicalStandard option (e.g. 50T main hoist + 10T aux hoist)
Operator ControlPendant pushbutton or wireless radio remotePendant, wireless remote, or enclosed operator cabin
Initial Capital CostEconomical (20% to 35% lower cost)Higher initial investment for heavy duty service

When to Select a Single Girder EOT Crane

A single girder bridge crane is the optimal engineering choice when:

  • Your regular lifting requirements fall between 1 Ton and 15 to 20 Tons.
  • The building's structural columns and gantry girders were designed for lighter wheel loads.
  • You want an economical lifting solution for machine shops, light fabrication, tool rooms, pump assembly, or warehouses.
  • Headroom is moderate, or you can utilize a low headroom wire rope hoist to maximize hook reach.

When to Select a Double Girder EOT Crane

A double girder overhead crane is indispensable when:

  • Your Safe Working Load exceeds 20 Tons, up to 100 Tons.
  • Your building bay spans exceed 25 to 30 meters, where single girders would suffer excessive deflection.
  • Maximum hook height is required because large equipment or machinery must be lifted over existing machine tools on the shop floor.
  • The crane will operate under heavy duty cycles (IS 3177 Class III or Class IV / M7 to M8 duty) in steel rolling mills, heavy foundries, or power plants.
  • An auxiliary secondary hoist is needed for fast shifting of lighter hooks on the same crab trolley.
